category Liver Transplant heart_check Liver Diseases

Liver cirrhosis treatment cost in India averages about ₹1.8 lakh for non-transplant care, ranging from roughly ₹1.5 lakh in Tier 2 cities to ₹3.5 lakh in Tier 1 cities. A liver transplant, needed only in advanced disease, costs ₹15–35 lakh. The final figure depends on the stage of cirrhosis, complications such as ascites or variceal bleeding, and the hospital.

Liver cirrhosis is late-stage scarring of the liver that is generally not fully reversible. Treatment focuses on managing the cause, controlling complications and, in advanced cases, considering a transplant. How Much Does Liver Cirrhosis Treatment Cost in India?

  • Non-transplant care: National average comes to ₹1.8 lakh, with ₹1.5 lakh in Tier 2 and ₹3.5 lakh in Tier 1 cities.
  • Liver transplant:  ₹15–35 lakh is the standard benchmark.

Costs differ because of the stage, the complications and the treatment route. Early (compensated) cirrhosis usually means long-term medicines and monitoring. Advanced (decompensated) cirrhosis can involve repeated admissions, ICU care or transplantation.

What Decides the Cost of Liver Cirrhosis Treatment?

  • Compensated vs. decompensated cirrhosis: complications multiply costs.
  • Underlying cause: hepatitis B, hepatitis C, alcohol-related liver disease or fatty liver disease (MASLD) need different medicines.
  • Complications: ascites, variceal bleeding, hepatic encephalopathy and infections.
  • Duration of treatment and follow-up: cirrhosis care is long-term.
  • Hospital type, city, specialist fees and ICU needs.

What Do Medicines, Tests and Procedures Cost for Cirrhosis?

How much do liver cirrhosis medicines cost?

  • Diuretics (for ascites) and beta-blockers (to lower portal pressure and bleeding risk) are mostly generic and inexpensive.
  • Lactulose is affordable; rifaximin, added for recurrent hepatic encephalopathy, costs noticeably more.
  • Antivirals for hepatitis B (long-term) or hepatitis C (a fixed course) are needed only where indicated.
  • Nutritional supplements and vitamins are prescribed case by case.

Many patients spend roughly ₹3,000–₹10,000 a month on medicines, with the upper end driven by rifaximin and antivirals. Some medicines are lifelong.

What tests are needed, and what does monitoring involve?

Routine follow-up covers liver function tests, CBC, kidney function and electrolytes, and an abdominal ultrasound. Further tests are added as needed: FibroScan, upper GI endoscopy, and MRI or CT. Because cirrhosis raises liver cancer risk, doctors also advise ultrasound surveillance about every six months, sometimes with an AFP blood test.

2026 trend: non-invasive assessment is replacing repeated biopsies. FibroScan elastography and blood-based scores such as FIB-4 help stage fibrosis and track change over time, which keeps long-term monitoring cheaper and safer.

What do procedures for cirrhosis complications cost?

Procedure Why It Is Performed Indicative Cost at Paras Hospital
Paracentesis (ascitic tap) Removes excess abdominal fluid ₹8,000 to ₹10,000
Endoscopic variceal band ligation (EVL) Controls or prevents oesophageal variceal bleeding ₹40,000 to ₹85,000
TIPS Reduces portal pressure in selected patients ₹1.6–₹4+ lakh; elective ~₹2–3.5 lakh
Liver biopsy Clarifies diagnosis in selected cases ₹10,000 to ₹15,000 with an average of  ₹12,500
Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) Treats selected liver tumours, not cirrhosis itself ₹1–2.5 lakh (see liver cancer costs)

Not every patient needs these. They address specific complications or an associated liver tumour, and none of them cures cirrhosis.

What Does a Liver Transplant Cost for a Cirrhosis Patient?

A transplant is considered when cirrhosis becomes advanced: ascites that resists medicines, recurrent encephalopathy, repeated variceal bleeding, a rising MELD score, or liver cancer within transplant criteria. An assessment does not automatically lead to surgery. Transplants come from a living donor (a compatible relative assessed under Indian law) or a deceased donor.

Transplant Type Estimated Cost (India)
Living donor ₹18–25 lakh
Deceased donor ₹20–25 lakh
ABO-incompatible ₹22–32 lakh

Packages for liver transplant usually bundle evaluation, surgery, ICU (5–10 days) and ward stay (10–15 days), so do not add those on top. Post-transplant immunosuppressants are lifelong, at roughly ₹4,000–₹25,000 a month depending on the phase.

Why Do Some Patients Pay More for Cirrhosis Treatment?

  • Advanced-stage cirrhosis and repeated hospital admissions
  • Internal bleeding and infections
  • Kidney complications, including hepatorenal syndrome
  • ICU admission and prolonged hospitalisation
  • Liver cancer developing alongside cirrhosis
  • The need for a transplant and long-term immunosuppression

This is why two patients with the same diagnosis can receive very different estimates.

Can Cirrhosis Be Managed Without a Transplant?

Often, yes. Established scarring is generally not fully reversible, but treating the cause, avoiding alcohol, controlling metabolic risks, staying vaccinated and screening for liver cancer can keep the disease stable for years, and that keeps costs lower.

Where Can You Get Affordable Liver Cirrhosis Treatment in India?

Major hubs with hepatology and transplant programmes include Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Kochi. Tier 2 centres such as Patna, Lucknow and Chandigarh are generally cheaper for non-transplant care. In North India, LivCure’s team treats patients at Paras Health Gurugram, Panchkula and Patna, led by Dr. Ankur Garg, who has performed over 4,500 liver transplants.
