Who needs Liver Transplant?

Liver transplant is a life-saving procedure reserved for individuals with severe liver disease or liver failure. It may be recommended for individuals experiencing the following conditions:

  1. End-Stage Liver Disease (ESLD): When the liver has reached a point where it can no longer function effectively, often due to conditions like cirrhosis, hepatitis, or autoimmune liver diseases.

  2. Acute Liver Failure: A rapid loss of liver function, typically within days or weeks, which can result from various causes such as drug toxicity, viral hepatitis, or autoimmune hepatitis.

  3. Liver Cancer (Hepatocellular Carcinoma): In some cases, liver transplant may be an option for individuals with liver cancer that has not spread beyond the liver and meets certain criteria.

  4. Biliary Atresia: A rare condition in infants where the bile ducts inside or outside the liver are absent or blocked, leading to liver damage.

  5. Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC) or Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC): Chronic liver diseases affecting the bile ducts, which can lead to liver damage over time.

  6. Hereditary Liver Diseases: Certain genetic conditions affecting the liver, such as hemochromatosis, Wilson's disease, or alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, may necessitate a liver transplant in severe cases.

  7. Alcoholic Liver Disease: In advanced stages of alcohol-related liver disease, when other treatments have been unsuccessful in halting liver damage.

  8. Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) and Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH): Severe cases of these conditions, which involve the accumulation of fat in the liver and can progress to liver fibrosis and cirrhosis.

It's important to note that the decision to undergo a liver transplant is complex and requires careful evaluation by a multidisciplinary team of hepatologists, transplant surgeons, and other specialists. Each case is unique, and transplant candidacy depends on factors such as overall health, severity of liver disease, and the presence of other medical conditions. If you or a loved one are facing liver disease, consulting with a liver transplant center can provide valuable guidance and support in understanding your options.
